Why Suicide Prevention Week?

The goal of Suicide Prevention Week is to globally promote awareness and advocacy about suicide prevention. Significant efforts have been in place for many years to address the problem of suicide, but all those involved recognize that there is much work still to be done. This year's theme, "Embracing Diversity in Research and Practice," acknowledges that efforts are underway and focuses attention on the critical issue of better preparing all those who are in a position to respond to those at risk for suicide. Over 1 million people die by suicide worldwide each year and many more make suicide attempts. The cost of suicide and suicide-related behavior is staggering, both emotionally and financially.

Surviving Suicide: Those Left Behind
The two-year average for suicides in America exceeds the total number of casualties in the Vietnam War. What happens to the loved ones left behind? When unable to escape feelings of guilt, they are nine times more likely to take their own lives. Judy and Paul Tunkle-who lost their daughter, Lea, at the age of 22-have worked tirelessly to change that. This program highlights their efforts, as well as the labors of many survivors, to provide assistance to those left in suicide's wake. Along the way, the Tunkles reflect on their daughter's life, and other survivors share their experiences of loss and hope. A Discovery Channel Production. (51 minutes)

Alone
Local cinematographer and poet Diego Lopez. A heartwarming account of a friend who died by suicide and his struggle with depression. This film is an educational film stressing awareness, education and a personal account on how suicide affects those left behind. (this is a great film) 30 minutes
